Farmhouse wedding venues near Barcelona: how to compare them
An honest guide to comparing masia wedding venues: what to ask on every visit, and when La Masseria is a good fit for you, and when it isn't.

When you compare farmhouse wedding venues near Barcelona, look past the photos at exclusivity, real capacity, catering, the rain plan, schedules and music, distance, and what is included. This guide explains what to ask about each and, as an example, how we do things at La Masseria de Mas Vall-llovera, a 15th-century masia (Catalan farmhouse) in Tona, Osona, about 50 minutes by car from Barcelona.
What to look for in farmhouse wedding venues near Barcelona
On social media, many masia wedding venues around Barcelona look alike. The differences are in the small print. Decide what is non-negotiable (guests, food, finishing time) and ask every venue the same questions; there's a template table further down.
Exclusive use or a venue shared with other weddings?
Some venues host more than one wedding on the same day, in different rooms or in shifts; others are hired as a whole.
- Shared venue: perhaps more dates, but you may cross paths with other guests, share parking or have tighter timings.
- Exclusive venue: the whole estate is yours, with no rush and no music from another party.
Ask it plainly: "Will there be another celebration that day?" At La Masseria the answer is no. The masia is hired exclusively, one celebration at a time, and its 5 hectares of private nature are just for you.
How many guests really fit?
A maximum figure means little without the format: seated, cocktail, outdoors or indoors if it rains. Ask for the minimum, the maximum and the seated capacity of each indoor space. At La Masseria de Mas Vall-llovera we host celebrations for 10 to 100 guests. La Sala Interior (the indoor hall) seats 70, or holds 100 in cocktail format, and outside there are El Jardí (the garden) and La Plaça Major (the main square). If your guest list is short, our guide to a micro wedding at a farmhouse in Catalonia may help.
In-house catering or free choice of caterer: pros and cons
Venues with in-house catering
- Pros: one point of contact and less coordination.
- Cons: less freedom to choose the cooking and supplier; you work within their menus.
Venues with free choice of caterer
- Pros: you choose the caterer or food you want and shape the menu around your style.
- Cons: one more supplier to coordinate, who needs to know the venue and its rules.
If catering is free choice, ask what kitchen equipment there is and whether the venue can recommend suppliers. La Masseria works with free choice of catering: we have no in-house catering, but we can recommend trusted suppliers. La Sala Interior has an office kitchen with a fridge, ceramic hob, microwave and dishwasher.

Included spaces and a plan B for rain
Ask which spaces are part of the hire and where each part of the day would happen if it rains. A good plan B is a specific space that is big enough, not a "we'll see".
At La Masseria, every space is included in the exclusive hire: El Jardí (a 250 m² lawn with views over the valley and the Montseny, where marquees or tipis can be set up), La Plaça Major with La Bodega de la Masseria de Mas Vall-llovera under the stone arcade, the air-conditioned La Sala Interior, La Sala Relax and La Sala dels Nuvis (the couple's room), which is included for weddings. For more detail, see our guide to a rain plan for a farmhouse wedding.
Schedules and music limits
This is where many surprises happen. Ask about arrival and finishing times, whether you can add hours, and how late amplified music is allowed.
At La Masseria de Mas Vall-llovera, daytime events run from 11:00 to 20:00 and evening events from 16:00 to 00:00. Extra hours can be requested as an option. Amplified music outdoors is allowed until 00:00.
Distance from Barcelona, access and parking
"Near Barcelona" can mean half an hour or well over an hour. Work out the journey from where your guests live, and ask about access and parking spaces.
La Masseria is in Tona, in the Osona district, about 50 minutes from Barcelona by car, with a private car park inside the estate for 60 cars.
What is included and what is an extra
Two similar venues can turn out very different once you add up the extras. Ask in writing what the hire includes and what is optional.
At La Masseria, the hire includes exclusive use of every space and basic furniture in La Sala Interior. Optional extras are a barbecue service (equipment, charcoal and cleaning included), a kids' area with a trampoline and inflatables, and extra hours.
Decoration and house rules
Every masia has rules to protect its stone and beams. Ask about them before you buy decorations.
At La Masseria de Mas Vall-llovera nothing may be nailed, screwed or stuck to the stone, beams or arches; fireworks, sky lanterns and flares are not allowed; confetti and petals must be biodegradable; barbecues are only possible through our barbecue service; and smoking is only allowed outdoors.
Visits, response times and contract questions
How a venue treats you before you sign says a lot about afterwards. Before signing, ask:
- What deposit is required and when the balance is due.
- What happens if you change the date or cancel.
- How much time there is for setting up and clearing away.
- What conditions outside suppliers must meet.
At La Masseria we reply in under 48 hours, and visits are by appointment. Bring any contract questions to your visit.

When La Masseria is a good fit, and when it isn't
No venue is right for everyone, and we'd rather say so clearly.
It's a good fit if...
- You want the whole masia to yourselves, with no other celebration.
- You'll have between 10 and 100 guests.
- You want to choose your own caterer.
- You love a rustic setting: a 15th-century masia with views of the Montseny.
- You want a personal touch: it's a family project run by Fabrizia and David, who live here with their daughter Andrea.
It isn't a fit if...
- You'll have more than 100 guests.
- You want an all-inclusive package with in-house catering.
- You need music outdoors after midnight, or want the party to run past 00:00 without booking extra hours.
- You want a venue inside the city of Barcelona.
In those cases, other venues will suit you better. And if we are a match, we'd love to meet you.
