There's no single right answer: the best time to get married is the one that suits your style, your guests and your budget. But the seasons are very noticeable in Osona, and knowing what to expect will help you choose wisely. Here's what each time of year looks like at a farmhouse on the plain, such as La Masseria de Mas Vall-llovera in Tona, with views of the Montseny, about 50 minutes from Barcelona.

What the weather is like in Osona

Osona is an inland county, and you can feel it. Compared with the coast, the contrasts are bigger: nights tend to be cool even in summer, winters are cold and the plain can be foggy, and summer days are hot but evenings are usually more comfortable than by the sea. Spring and autumn can be changeable, with glorious days and the odd shower. Whatever date you choose, it's worth having a wrap to hand and a plan B.

A spring wedding

From late March to June, the Osona countryside turns a deep green and the days grow longer each week.

Highlights

  • Green fields, flowers and soft light for your photos.
  • Pleasant temperatures for an outdoor ceremony.

Things to bear in mind

  • The weather can turn quickly, so keep the indoor plan B ready.
  • It gets cooler in the evening; let guests know to bring a layer.

Menu ideas

Asparagus, peas and broad beans, salads with tender young vegetables, strawberries for dessert.

Ceremony arch with red and orange flowers and wooden chairs in the garden, with a leather sofa in front of the trees

A summer wedding

July and August bring the longest days of the year and dinners under the stars.

Highlights

  • Hours of daylight and little chance of persistent rain.
  • Perfect evenings for dinner in the Plaça Major and dancing outdoors.

Things to bear in mind

  • Midday is hot, so plan the ceremony for late afternoon.
  • Provide shade, water and fans for guests, and cold drinks at the welcome reception.

Menu ideas

Gazpacho, ripe seasonal tomatoes, rice dishes and grilled meats, summer fruit and ice cream.

An autumn wedding

For many couples, September and October are the sweet spot: the heat eases off and the landscape takes on warm colours.

Highlights

  • Mild daytime temperatures and beautiful woodland colours.
  • Golden sunsets for photos.

Things to bear in mind

  • Days are shorter, so time the ceremony to make the most of the natural light.
  • From mid-October nights are already cool; keep the indoor hall ready.

Menu ideas

Wild mushrooms, squash, chestnuts and sweet potatoes, gentle stews and local cured meats.

A winter wedding

From December to February, Osona is cold and the plain is often foggy. It's a less common time to marry, and that's exactly where its charm lies.

Highlights

  • More choice of dates and a warm, intimate atmosphere.
  • Wintry landscapes and, on some days, snow on the Montseny on the horizon.

Things to bear in mind

  • Almost the whole celebration will be indoors, in the air-conditioned hall.
  • It gets dark early, so plan photos for the early afternoon.

Menu ideas

Hearty Catalan escudella or warm soups, chargrilled meats, Osona cheeses and charcuterie, thick hot chocolate late at night.

Weekday or weekend?

Spring and autumn Saturdays are the first dates to go. If you're flexible, a Friday, a Sunday or a weekday can give you more choice and often makes it easier to find suppliers who are free. Do think about guests travelling from afar, though: a bank holiday weekend can be a good compromise.

Whatever the season, a solid plan B

No season guarantees the weather. That's why, at La Masseria de Mas Vall-llovera, the air-conditioned indoor hall, which seats 70 or holds 100 for a standing reception, is always available as plan B. Our guide on how to plan a farmhouse wedding explains how to prepare it, and you can see every corner of the estate on our spaces page.

Nights in Osona tend to be cooler than on the coast. In summer that's a bonus for dining outside, but in spring and autumn it's worth reminding guests to bring an extra layer.

What happens if it rains on our wedding day?
